Download– Tangerine Dream (1968)

Kaleidoscope was a british psych-pop/rock band from britain, not to be confused with the american band with the same name.. i love this band when they incorporate psychedelic influences and dreamy chords in their music, but have a hard time when they just turn to sleazy fairy-tale lyrics about unicorns, castles and other boring subjects wich sort of reduces the greatness of the music and makes me think of this album as one long lullaby. Still the music usually gives me means to forget about the cheesy lyrics. It is a great album, otherwise i wouldn’t be posting it here. Tangerine Dream was Kaleidoscope’s debut and it generated a moderate domestic success but got a bit more attention abroad. This album should probably appeal even to the average Beatles fan.

The hit song is called ”The Sky Children”, my favourite though is ”Flight from Ashiya”.

Download– Liege and Lief (1969)

Fairport Convention was a british folk rock band, they got their name from the house were they rehersed. Liege and Lief is the groups fourth album and widly considered a mile stone in british folk rock, one might even go as far as to say that it is the starting point at wich folk rock began to get popular. It contains a lot of Fairport Conventions own verisions of old popular folk ballads such as ”Matty Grooves” and ”Reynardine”.

Advaitic Songs

Om, formed by Al Cisneros after his former legendary doom metal band ”Sleep” decided to call it a quit. I’ve posted their third album ”Pilgrimage” on the blog before. This however is their latest output called ”Advaitic Songs”. It came out in stores not more than two weeks ago.

Om is a doom metal band, at least on the paper. Though with this release I dont really know what to make of it genrewise anymore, is it drone? Every album that they’ve made so far has been sort of  theme album on a melody that is played in different versions. Advaitic Songs however displays a bit more of variation when it comes to melody. Still this is with all certainty my favourite Om release so far!

The album starts smoothly with the track Addis. If you’re familiar with Om’s earlier releases then you’ve probably felt that the music always takes on a spiritual transcendental sound” (and seen, their albums of late have sported orthodox christian ikons on the front). Addis is a prime example of that ”spiritual sound”, it’s not hard to imagine someone standing at the top of a minaret humming this song.

To quote another listener: a spiritual expedition into the dynamics of heavy music.

The second sludgy track ”State of Non-Return” is the only track that is somewhat reminiscent to the doom metal sound, still I think this album in general catches the ”feeling of doom”. Check it out, maybe you agree or maybe you dont.

Rise of the serpent men

Download– Rise of the Serpent Men (1989)

Highly political working class crust punk/thrash metal classic from London, back in the days when Margaret Thatcher (The iron hag) was still pissing on labor unions, repressing strikes and collecting votes from the National Front. I imagine most of the boys in Axegrinder would have been of age when she decided to start the Falklands War. I would like to think that these facts have inspired Axegrinder as much as Amebix,Venom and Motörhead have.

I’m not to well wandered in the crust scene, but I think Axegrinder is almost as infamous as other crust legends such as Amebix and Discharge.

Download– Lillie: F-65 (2012)

After 17 years they are back and Wino is back in Vitus. All is well.
If you’re not familiar to Saint Vitus then I can tell you that they’re one of the oldest and most infamous doom metal acts, Lillie F-65 is therefore as you might understand one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year.

…and it’s like nothings changed! Of course the production quality is a bit cleaner and crispy, for good or worse. It’s also a bit shorter than most of their previous releases (only 33 min!!? I mean comon this is doom). But I got to say that I’m really satisfied with what I got. This is to much a reminder of their masterpiece ”Born too Late” for me to not be satisfied!

The album starts of with the ”hit song”, if there ever was such a thing in doom, Let Them Fall. My personal favourite though is Blessed Night

Since I saw them live 2 weeks ago, I’m happy to note that they’re still going strong! Plodding on in doom.

Here’s a couple of photos from the northern parts of Sweden called Lappland, lots of mountains and forests. I usually spend a week or so there every year.

Download– To Mega Therion (1985)

Todays entertainment, proletarian literature by swedish writer Fogelström and Celtic Frost. Or to be more precise ”To Mega Therion” their debut album. Heavier, more consistent and more riff laden than most about everything else that was being spat out at the time. A landmark of sorts you might say. Thrash metal with a touch of something a bit more darker, almost black metal sounding.  The album cover was painted by swiss surrealist painter H.R Giger , apart from painting the mostrosity that would become the Alien in the movie by the same title, he’s also painted album covers for Emerson Lake and Palmer amongst others.

In contradiction to me really liking this album, I have a lot of bad memories tied to it. For example being accidently hit over the head with an empty beer bottle at a garage concert and passing out whilst ”Jewel Throne” was being played in the background.

Download– 3 (1971)

American hard rock from the 70’s. At certain points it doesn’t sound to different from Uriah Heep. As the title might suggest this is Bloodrock’s third effort. A dandy rocker packed to the limit with heavy moments. Escpecially the second track on the first side called ”Whisky Vengeance” and the almost doom metal sounding first track ”Breach of Lease” on the second side comes to mind! Still the album doesn’t lack in funky jams.

This is a very good and talented friend of mine called Anton ”Sundelliluran” Sundell! In fact he is so talanted that he gets to do the effects on Witchcraft‘s upcoming fourth album. One of my favourite bands. He’s also got his own band called Åtgärdslandet, I’ve blogged about them before. You can check them out at soundcloud or contact me if you want a copy of their ep. They’ll soon put out some more material.

And raggare is still a bunch of MOTHER FUCKERS!

the pin was made by a small enterprise called ”Bastardized” run by swedish punksters Nitad. Sundelliluran had a hole bunch of them.
